On October 14, the Turkish Stainless Steel Industrial Association (PASSAD) and Istanbul Technical University (ITU) jointly organized the first National Stainless Steel Summit, with "increasing domestic stainless steel production" as the core agenda. Participants unanimously agreed that implementing anti-dumping duties is a key measure to ensure the sustainable development of this strategic industry.
In his opening speech, PASSAD President Haluk Kayabaş emphasized that stainless steel is a vital strategic industry for Turkey's economy and that its international competitiveness must be enhanced by increasing production capacity and innovation. He pointed out that the lack of effective trade protection measures would severely constrain the development of the domestic industry.
During the thematic discussion on the "International Stainless Steel Market," representatives highlighted the severe pressure and unfair competition faced by Turkish producers due to dumped products from abroad. The meeting concluded that, amid international trade frictions and the European Union's protectionist policies, Turkey's stainless steel industry is facing significant challenges. As a result, there was a strong call for the government to implement trade defense measures, such as anti-dumping duties on relevant imported products.
The joint organization of this summit by an industry association and an academic institution reflects a commitment to industry-academia collaboration in driving industrial transformation. The consensus within the industry indicates that, against the backdrop of rising global trade protectionism, Turkey needs to take decisive measures to safeguard its stainless steel industry. Subsequent policy developments warrant close attention.
