430 Stainless Steel is a ferritic, non-hardenable chromium-based alloy known for its good corrosion resistance, moderate strength, and cost-effectiveness. Containing 16-18% chromium and minimal nickel (≤0.75%), it offers excellent resistance to oxidizing acids, nitric environments, and atmospheric corrosion, though it is less resistant to chloride exposure compared to austenitic grades like 304. The alloy’s high chromium content provides strong oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures (up to 815°C / 1500°F) and magnetic properties, making it suitable for applications requiring magnetic permeability. Common uses include automotive trim, kitchen appliances, architectural trim, washing machine drums, and industrial exhaust systems. While it has limited weldability and formability compared to austenitic steels, its affordability and resistance to stress corrosion cracking make it ideal for less aggressive environments.
