South Korea plans to impose temporary anti-dumping duties
On January 16, the Korea Trade, Industry and Resources Trade Commission announced the preliminary investigation results on stainless steel medium and thick plates made in China at the 456th meeting of the Trade Commission, and decided to recommend that the Ministry of Economy and Finance impose a temporary anti-dumping duty of 21.62% on Chinese stainless steel medium and thick plates. Mainly because it has caused serious impact on the Korean steel industry in the shipbuilding field.
It is reported that the final conclusion of the anti-dumping investigation is expected to be announced around June after public hearings and on-site inspections. This temporary duty can even be imposed before the completion of the main anti-dumping investigation, providing a breathing space for the Korean steel industry.
Stainless steel plates refer to products with a thickness of ≥4.75mm and a width of ≥600mm, mainly used in shipbuilding.
According to the Korea Iron and Steel Association, the amount of stainless steel plates imported from China from January to October 2024 was 1.158 million tons, exceeding the total import volume of 1.123 million tons in 2023. To this end, the Korea Trade Commission decided to impose high temporary tariffs to protect the interests of local steel companies.
