304 stainless steel is a widely - used austenitic stainless steel. The chemical composition mainly includes chromium (Cr) around 18% - 20% and nickel (Ni) around 8% - 10.5%. The presence of chromium provides excellent corrosion resistance by forming a passive oxide film on the surface. Nickel enhances the ductility and toughness of the steel.

Corrosion Resistance

General Corrosion Resistance: 304 stainless steel coils have good resistance to atmospheric corrosion, which makes them suitable for outdoor applications such as building facades and signage. They can also resist corrosion from many chemicals, including weak acids and alkalis. For example, in a food processing plant, 304 stainless steel coils are used to fabricate equipment that comes into contact with food - grade acids and alkalis, such as storage tanks and conveyor belts.
Pitting and Crevice Corrosion Resistance: The material shows decent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. However, in environments with high chloride content, such as in some coastal areas or in industrial settings with chloride - containing chemicals, additional precautions like proper surface treatment or the use of more corrosion - resistant alloys may be needed to prevent pitting and crevice corrosion.
