Key Characteristics
1. Exceptional High-Temperature Resistance
Excellent Oxidation Resistance: Provides reliable service in continuous operation at temperatures up to 1150°C (2100°F) and up to 1035°C (1900°F) in cyclic service. It forms a stable, protective oxide layer that resists scaling and degradation.
Good Creep Strength: Maintains structural integrity and resists deformation under mechanical stress at elevated temperatures over prolonged periods.
2. Enhanced Corrosion Resistance
The high Chromium (22-24%) and Nickel (12-15%) content offers better resistance to oxidation, sulfidation, and other forms of hot gas corrosion than 304/304H.
Good general corrosion resistance in many atmospheric and mild chemical environments.
3. Low Carbon Content for High-Temperature Stability
The "S" in 309S denotes a low carbon content (≤0.08%). This is a critical advantage for welded components operating at high temperatures, as it minimizes the risk of harmful carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone, preserving corrosion resistance.
