1. Superior Machinability (Primary Advantage)
Excellent for High-Speed Machining: The addition of Sulfur (and sometimes Selenium) gives it a Machinability rating of approximately 75% (compared to 100% for a 1212 steel standard), which is one of the highest among stainless steels. This allows for:
Faster production speeds.
Better chip breaking.
Reduced tool wear.
Improved surface finish on machined parts.
2. Good Mechanical Properties
Exhibits good strength and toughness typical of austenitic stainless steels (similar to 304), making it suitable for structural components in non-corrosive environments.
3. Decent Corrosion Resistance
Provides good resistance to a wide range of atmospheres and mild corrosive media, comparable to 304 in many environments. However, the sulfur addition slightly reduces its corrosion resistance compared to 304, particularly in marine or chloride-rich settings.
