430 Stainless Steel: An Introduction
1.Good General Corrosion Resistance: Offers better resistance to atmospheric corrosion, many organic chemicals, and oxidizing acids (like nitric acid) than plain carbon steels. Its resistance stems from its 16-18% Chromium content, which forms a protective passive layer.
Magnetic Properties: Unlike common austenitic grades (e.g., 304), 430 is ferromagnetic, making it suitable for applications requiring magnetic response.
Cost-Effectiveness: It contains no Nickel, making it significantly less expensive than austenitic grades like 304, while still offering a good combination of properties.
Good Formability: Exhibits reasonable ductility and formability in the annealed condition, particularly for bending or moderate drawing operations.
Decent High-Temperature Oxidation Resistance: Maintains reasonable scaling resistance in intermittent service up to about 815°C (1500°F), making it useful for some heat-exposed components.
