410 stainless steel is a ferritic stainless steel, primarily composed of iron, chromium (ranging from 11.5 - 13.5%), and a small amount of carbon (usually ≤0.15%), with no nickel or molybdenum added. The chromium content in its composition is the core to forming a passive oxide layer on the surface, which gives it basic corrosion resistance to resist mild corrosive environments such as ordinary moisture and weak acids. Unlike austenitic stainless steels, it does not rely on nickel to stabilize the austenitic structure, so its mechanical properties are more dependent on chromium content and heat treatment processes. Without molybdenum, its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion is relatively limited, making it more suitable for general atmospheric or low-corrosion environments rather than harsh chemical or high-salt conditions.
